Have you ever had a yearning to do something and have held back or put the idea off for another time? This was how I was with growing vegetables. Si and I moved to a lovely rented thatched cottage which had a massive garden. Beyond the stream was a perfect "paddock" which had the frame for a polytunnel and that was about it. I decided that I really wanted to grow veg so we built three raised beds and off to a seed shop I went.
That first year I grew amazing courgettes, an abundance of lettuces and tomatoes, failed corn and zero potatoes. Successes and failures I loved it! However the landlord decided he wanted to sell so we set about looking for a new house in the same village as we were settled and happy.
High on the list of wants was a double garage and big, big garden, half an acre would be a great start. We searched in Whimple and didn't find anything. In the surrounding villages we found many that fitted most of our requirements and put offers in on a couple but they fell through. Almost in desperation we looked at a modern house in Whimple which neither of us wanted but it was just around the corner from the pub. Reluctantly we met the estate agent and walked in the door. Yep we'll have it! That was that...double garage, roomy house and a nice private smallish garden which - perfect for chilling out and having bbqs, and enjoying the company of our friends around the firepit.
We moved in, settled down and life continued. I grew tomatoes in growbags out the front of the house, as the garden is north facing and shady, and little else and hoped the yearning would go away.
